Hellenic Train Launches Train Driver Training and Certification on Coradia Stream Test Train
Athens, 19 Μarch 2026
Hellenic Train, in line with the timetable it has set for the introduction of new electric multiple units into its fleet, is proceeding with the launch of the training and certification programme for train drivers on the Coradia Stream test train, as part of the type approval process for the new electric rolling stock.
Driver training and certification
The training programme will take place from 9 to 18 March and includes the following stages:
- Static training at the depot,
- First departure of the train from the depot,
- Training under real operating conditions on the railway network and
- Certification examinations for this specific rolling stock type.
Upon completion of the process, Hellenic Train will have ten (10) certified train drivers, who will support the next phases of the testing programme.

Operational testing on the railway network
Testing on the railway network is scheduled to begin between 23 March and 17 April, as part of the approval process for the new train type.
The tests include technical checks related to:
- the operation of the train,
- compatibility with railway infrastructure, and
- interaction with the electrification system.
In parallel, pantograph tests (the mechanism that draws electrical power from the overhead line) will be carried out at different contact wire heights, with test runs on the following sections:
- Platy – Katerini
- Tithorea – Lianokladi
These tests will be conducted at speeds of up to 160 km/h, following special authorization from the Infrastructure Manager, Hellenic Railways Organization (OSE).

Specialized technical tests
At a later stage, the following will be carried out:
- Bogie tests (wheelset and suspension systems), during which the forces transmitted from the rolling stock to the railway infrastructure are assessed
- checks for possible adjustments or adaptations to the maintenance plan
In mid-May, tests of the ETCS system (European Train Control System) are also scheduled.
These tests will be carried out in cooperation with the Infrastructure Manager, in order to confirm compatibility between the trackside equipment and the train’s onboard equipment.
Approval process
These tests constitute a key stage in the process of obtaining approval for placing the new train type on the market, in accordance with the applicable regulatory framework.
The certification process is expected to be completed by December 2026, with the issuance of the necessary approvals from the Hellenic Railway Regulatory Authority (RAS) and the European Union Agency for Railways (ERA).
The certification of the new trains forms part of Hellenic Train’s €308 million investment programme, aimed at renewing and strengthening its fleet, modernizing rail transport and gradually upgrading services provided to passengers.
