Hellenic Train is investing in a new generation of electric trains through a €308 million programme – the largest investment ever made in land transport in Greece.

01
What this investment means for passengers
+

From the moment you board, what you need is simple: peace of mind and a journey that unfolds the way you expect it to – and perhaps a little better.

The new trains are designed precisely with this in mind. They offer:

  • spacious first and second-class interiors
  • increased capacity (up to 332 passengers on intercity services and up to 365 on suburban services)
  • low-floor access and boarding without steps
  • easy access for passengers with reduced mobility or large luggage
  • dedicated areas for bicycles and pushchairs

And, above all, a level of safety and technology that redefines confidence in rail travel.

02
What’s “under the hood”
+

The new electric trains are built for fast, quiet and environmentally considerate journeys.

They feature:

  • maximum speed of up to 160 km/h, powered by two electric traction motors,
  • energy recovery systems to reduce environmental impact,
  • low-noise operation and reduced vibration for a smoother ride.
  • modern safety and train control systems,

These are trains that are already in service across Europe, the Americas and Africa, with more than 4,500 units of this family running every day. Their reliability is proven.

03
When and where we’ll see them in Greece
+

The gradual introduction of the new trains will begin in the second quarter of 2027.

Intercity axis Athens – Thessaloniki

  • 12 new trains
  • up to 332 passengers per train
  • a more comfortable, stable and quiet long-distance journey

Suburban lines

  • 11 new trains
  • Piraeus – Athens – Airport
  • Athens – Chalkida
  • Athens – Kiato – Patras (*)
  • up to 365 passengers per train

(*) The extension to Patras depends on the completion of the new infrastructure.

04
Preparing from today
+

Bringing new trains into service involves much more than simply taking delivery. It requires training, organisation and technical readiness.

That is why, as of February 2026, an extensive training programme for drivers, technicians and support staff will be underway, so that the new trains can enter service fully prepared and safe.

05
A step towards a more modern railway
+

The new trains mark a shift in mindset and represent a first major step towards a railway that is more modern, more people-centred and more reliable. A railway that respects the passenger’s time, journey and overall experience. With transparency, consistency and tangible, measurable improvements.

And with one clear promise: to earn and re-earn passengers’ trust through every journey.
