Safety
Safety lies at the core of our operations.
Safety in practice.
Together, ERTMS, ETCS and TCMS form a multi-layered safety framework that:
- supports drivers in their work,
- ensures continuous monitoring of the route,
- protects passengers and staff at every stage of operation.
In short…
…the new trains are designed so that safety works in the background – continuously, quietly and with reliability.
The new trains are fitted with ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System), the unified European system for signalling and speed control, which:
- raises safety levels,
- increases network capacity,
- enables interoperability between different countries and systems.
It is the most advanced European safety technology currently deployed on rail networks.
Part of ERTMS is ETCS (European Train Control System), a digital system that monitors the train in real time. Put simply, ETCS is in constant communication with the control centre and can intervene whenever needed. If it detects an issue that requires action, it can activate automatic braking to ensure the train’s safe running.
Hellenic Train’s new fleet is also equipped with TCMS (Train Control and Management System), a central system that monitors and controls all critical functions, including:
- traction motors and propulsion,
- braking,
- doors,
- ventilation, heating and air-conditioning.
TCMS acts as the “brain” of the train, coordinating everything so that the journey runs smoothly and performance remains stable, while enabling timely response to any malfunction.
